I loved to hear my nieces and nephew call my mother, grandmother. They always called her by that name. In our conversations together they would ask me, “How is grandmother feeling today?” My sister-in-law called her by Mother, even though I called her momma.
Momma is no longer with us yet I still love to hear that name. So there was no wonder, at least not to me, when I asked that my new grandchild call me grandmother. Grandma or granny was not what I wanted. I do not consider myself all that and a bag of chips, even though I do have a young-looking face, those names just did not wear well on me. I just loved and wanted the name grandmother. As it turned out, it did not matter what I wanted. Her parent completely objected to it. Sigh.
Oh well, time’s a changing. When the phone rings I answer and hear, “Hi grandma” from my grandchildren, my heart melts to the floor and I realize how truly blessed I am that I can hear them. Uh huh, that’s right! You can call me a changed woman.
